Medieval City of Greben

The medieval fortified city of Greben is situated on the top of the mountain in the region of Krupa na Vrbasu. The first mention of the city of Greben dates back to 1192. Between 1527 and 1528 Greben was damaged due to the arrival of Ottomans.  The ruins of this fortress can still be seen today. The tower and the rampart have sustained less damage than the rest of the city. Besides the historical significance, visitors can enjoy the beauty of the Vrbas River canyon and its surroundings.

Medieval Fort of Bočac

The Bočac fort is situated on the left bank of the Vrbas between Banja Luka and Jajce. It was built at the beginning of the 15th century on the face of a large rock formation towering over the River Vrbas. The purpose of the fort was primarily to keep invaders from using the river to gain access to the town of Bočac and surrounding area.

 

However, the town fell into the hands of the Ottoman Empire in 1527. The Ottomans strengthened the ramparts and preserved the fort. In the early 19th century, the fort was abandoned. The well-preserved ramparts and towers of the medieval town of Bočac can still be viewed today.

Medieval Fortress of Zvečaj

The remains of the medieval city of Zvečaj are located on the slopes of the Zvečaj rock formation on the left bank of the Vrbas River. The earliest documented mention of Zvečaj was near the beginning of the 15th century. At the end of the 15th century, the city of Zvečaj was conquered by the Hungarian army.  At the beginning of the 16th century it was released to the Ottoman army.  Today, only one of the many towers of the fortress has been preserved.

Stone Bridge

The naturally carved Stone Bridge is the starting point for the hiking tour over the mountain Manjača, leading uphill to the Monastery of Gomionica.

 

This location is also the spot for setting up the International Free Climbing Camp that hosts the climbers from all over the world. The climbing tracks are particularly attractive due to the fantastic view of the surrounding landscape and Vrbas valley.

National Park Kozara

The heights of the rolling hills of Kozara create a richly picturesque view for visitors. Enjoy the natural beauty that inspired Kozara’s protection as a national forest since 1967. The park is situated between the Una, Sava, Sana and Vrbas rivers. Kozara is often referred to as the "Green Beauty of Krajina" because of its dense forest and hilly meadows.

 

In addition to a beautiful view of the mountains, visitors will be delighted by the pure mountain springs and the fragrance of the evergreen trees and herbs. Some of the activities to be enjoyed are walking, hiking, biking and herb picking. During the winter months skiing is also available.

Eco-Camp Zelenkovac

Eco-camp Zelenkovac is a mountain camp residing at a height of 863 meters above sea level.  Eco-camp is situated on the banks of the clear mountain spring Zelenkovac.  For decades the waters of Zelenkovac have been powering the fifteen watermills placed throughout the area. Throughout the years Zelenkovac has hosted various gatherings such as art-colonies, jazz concerts, poetry evenings, school classes in nature, theater shows, sport contests and many other activities.

 

Zelenkovac has become an oasis for people to reconnect with nature, highlighted with cultural and various other events. Those who visit Zelenkovac will be treated to healthy, domestic food made on an open fire. For longer stays on the territory of the camp, bungalows and campgrounds are available.

Gomionica Monastery

Gomionica Monastery is situated on the bank of the Gomionica river in an area boasting dense forests and vast meadows.  The beauty of untouched nature makes this a great choice for a relaxing getaway. The first written documents that mention Monastery Gomionica are dated back to the 1540. Several icons inside the Monastery are said to be the work of famous medieval painter Constantine. Today Gomionica is a female monastery. Visitors are greeted by welcoming nuns who offer coffee, refreshment, and any any other help that might be needed.

Krupa Monastery

Krupa Monastery is known to be one of the oldest monasteries in the Banja Luka region.  It was originally built at the end of 13th century on the banks of the Krupa river.  The existence of the Krupa monastery is marked with many unfortunate events encountered throughout centuries. Between the 17th and 20th centuries due to wars, disputes and other circumstances it was badly damaged and rebuilt multiple times.

 

The Monastery was recently restored and expanded.  The newly constructed building features a distinct and beautiful antique appearance.  Krupa Monastery invites the visitor to quiet contemplation beside its clear river and observation of the untouched nature that surrounds it.

Franciscan Monestary of Marija Zvijezda

Those looking for unexpected beauty need look no further than the Franciscan Monastery of Marija Zvijezda.  The colors and paintings found here leave the observer in awe.  Visitors can see rare and valuable books, including epistles of St. Augustine, as well as priceless paintings.  Food-lovers will be delighted to discover the regionally famous white cheese made here.
